Get a Room! #4: Shaping sex, designing sexuality

Design is practically all around us these days, influencing everything from Alzheimer’s to herb gardens. And our own experiences have started to make us wonder. Again. Why does Design Academy Eindhoven have graduate tracks such as Man and Identity and Man and Activity, but not Man and Sex? Shouldn’t the sexual aspect be implemented into every specialization regardless of the program’s content? How does art school Artez in Arnhem handle the issue of sex? After all, it’s no rarity for sofas to become important props for steamy scenes. Who wouldn’t enjoy a lamp dimming automatically as soon as it detects the air is saturated with pheromones? And how about our public space – it wouldn’t hurt if it facilitated our lust here and there, now would it?

There’s an immeasurable divide between DDW and sex, if you ask us. Is sex taboo in design thinking, or are we the ones who are not getting it? We refuse to think in clichés; we want to go deep. It is high time to set an exploratory touchstone, and we will do so with the help of Robert Adolfsson, Bastiaan Buijs, Mark Sturkenboom and Joanette van der Veer. Expect an uncompromising discussion shaping sex standards in the world of design.

Get a Room!, organised by Firma Vruchtvlees in cooperation with MU, is a series of 4 film- and debate nights about the one subject that keeps fascinating us: sexuality. Everything can be a subject of discussion, nothing stays out.
